New York State Liquor Authority – Beer Pong Oct. 2009

 

 

According to new and legal sources, New York State is cracking down on beer pong tournaments in the State.  The top drinking authorities disapproved of tournaments on the grounds that they promoted competitive drinking instead of encouraging modest and responsible drinking.  (The Gothamist, 2009).

 

To respond to this law, tournaments such as DOE Pong, World Beer Pong Tour, and more serve water in the cups, and the individual may choose to drink or not.  These options allow any individual to play beer pong, whether they wish to drink or not.  And while many individuals choose to drink alcohol during the tournaments, they all do so legally, and are not forced or pressured into drinking at all.  In fact, if they choose to drink it has a negative impact on their accuracy and likelihood of winning.

 

So this response to the law clearly reduces the pressure to drink during beer pong tournaments.  It in fact complies with the law by “encouraging temperance” since not drinking increases their likelihood of winning the game and the cash prizes.  The beer pong tournaments actually discourage individuals from drinking, so one can only hope the New York authorities accept this generous reaction to their rules.

 

Beer Pong is a fun game, and mixes a social, festive environment with a game of skill and accuracy.  Companies such as Red Cup Pong (www.redcuppong.com) offer disclaimers to ensure their products are not abused.  And while the traditional sport where teams of two people shoot pong balls into cups has become known as beer pong and associated with beer, but in fact drinking alcohol is not encourage and is completely optional.  Most companies warn the consumers to comply with all local restrictions when playing pong, and ask them to be of the appropriate age if they choose to use the beer pong tables to play beer pong with an alcoholic beverage.
